MFalls golfers battle Mother Nature during regional tourneys
The golf season for Marble Falls High School ended at the Class 5A Region IV tournament April 18-21.
Maddie DeBerard finished 15th in the girls division thanks to scoring 80-83–163, good enough for all-region honorable mention. Blake Turner shot an 83-76–159 to finish tied for 24th in the boys division, while teammate Coby Holley had an 86-82–168 to tie for 43rd.
Head coach Ricky Blackington noted the golfers faced more than the region’s best in San Antonio.
“The Texas weather was in full display throughout our time at the Golf Club of Texas,” he said. “Our players experienced very hot and muggy conditions along with the cold, windy, wet and even some hail. This time of year you almost have to expect the unexpected with weather. Through it all our players stayed focused and used solid judgment as they prepared to make each shot.”
He noted all three experienced the ups and downs that come with playing at regionals.
“Maddie was in the hunt all day, but if the putting and chipping had been stronger, she could have shot a much lower number,” the coach said. “All in all she still wasn’t too far out of contention on the leader board if she could come back in round two and post a mid 70’s round. The second day started out really well until a few chipping issues set her back. From there it was playing catch up. She didn’t finish where she wanted, but there was no doubt that she gave her best.”
Blackington pointed out that Turner and Holley had a better second day.
“The second round was much more dialed in and better for them,” he said. “The greens played very different than we are accustomed to, which forced lots of adjustments on putts, chips and approach shots. Then when you factor in windy conditions, it always created a situation where many things had to be considered before a game plan on a shot could be made. I am very proud to report that both guys showed their golf knowledge and experience in all these situations, and they worked to stay in it throughout both rounds.”
